A rich history in Kenora

The Headwaters occupies the southernmost tip of Kenora's historic Tunnel Island or Ka-izhe-ki-pi-chiin (a place to stay over) as it was originally known to the Anishinaabe people. The island and the surrounding area have a rich history, dating back more than 8000 years.

Since 200 BC, there has been increasing sophistication in The Headwaters area as demonstrated through the crafting of well-made pottery, the bow and arrow, birch bark canoes and pictographs.

The fur trade in the early 1700s signaled an era of exploration and competition in the region surrounding The Headwaters. With the headwaters of the Winnipeg River system located near The Headwaters site, there is no doubt that this site was rich with potential as it served as a crossroads and meeting place for commerce and refuge.

Beginning in the early 1900s, Lake of the Woods has attracted tourists from across North America including famous American stage and 'moving picture' stars, industrialists and other wealthy patrons. Tourism of the rich and famous has helped shape the character of the area and created a playground for the privileged.

Take your place at The Headwaters. Located south of Lakeshore Drive on the southern tip of Tunnel Island, your playground is referred to as the jewel of Kenora. Following a blessing of the building site in a ceremony conducted by local elders on August 29, 2008, an official sod-turning heralded a new page in the colourful history of this very special place.
